Vodka or Champagne?

Caviar & Champagne at Manetta's Bar

Vodka and Caviar is probably as popular as Wine and Cheese in people’s minds. Vodka and Caviar is a famous pairing in Russian tradition. You have to serve the vodka straight and ice cold in tumblers. My palate is not really used to Vodka, therefore this rather strong alcohol numbs my tongue, which gets in the way of experiencing the delicate flavors that Caviar has to offer.

I much prefer Champagne with Caviar as they pair perfectly well. Enjoy a spoon of caviar followed by a sip of champagne, and the flavors of the caviar will last longer in your mouth. A crisp champagne will bring out the savouriness, while a sweeter Champagne like Rose Champagne will highlight the nuttiness of the Caviar. Fun fact: one same Caviar will have different notes highlighted depending on the type of Champagne you are drinking. This is fascinating as it enables you to explore the different tasting notes a Caviar has to offer with much greater depth.

There are endless possibilities in terms of pairing Caviar with drinks, you can try different options and have fun noting what flavors are enhanced by which drinks. Some hints: try it with beer, with sake, with wine, but also with tea.
